Dancing salsa & bachata, teaching, traveling, making videos, learning Spanish, recording my cats for my videos, eating lots of veggie food, and being with my dear ones: these are the things I love to do most in life!
It’s funny how one of the things I was not so interested in when I was in middle school (namely: languages) one day became my passion, and right now is what I am teaching my students! Two years after graduating from high school I started studying Dutch Language and Literature (in Leiden, Amsterdam and Berlin). I loved doing research, so after I got my Masters’ Degree, I started a PhD in which I was examining Dutch novels with computational tools. If you are interested in what I was doing, you can read my Research Blog.
What I loved about my PhD, besides the research, was teaching and supervising students. But what I didn’t love so much was all the stress of having deadline after deadline, so I got burned out and had to quit. That’s why, by the end of 2016, I made a career switch and decided to teach Dutch as a second language. I developed my own materials and teaching style, trying to make the classes fun! I was teaching private classes, started a weekly group conversation class and organized social Meetups for students so they could practice with each other. I noticed that a lot of students tend to make similar mistakes, and in the summer of August 2019 I wanted to make short videos about those mistakes and to publish them on YouTube. After I made the first video, I was hooked! I found my new passion: making FUN videos! And so, my journey as an online language teacher began.
At the start, I never would have imagined that it was possible to have my own business, making online Dutch courses, teaching so many students from all over the world! It makes me super happy I can teach all of you, and that I get so many enthusiastic and grateful comments from a lot of you in return! Each of your nice comments provides me with energy and power to continue! So, for sure, if we keep on working together like this, you can continue learning Dutch with Kim!
